Bill Schang served Ripon College for 41 years, from 1969 to 2011, as a member of the English Department and as Dean of Faculty.
He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. He was awarded the May Bumby Severy Award for Excellence in Teaching four times; the Senior Class Award for Teaching four times; and the James Underkofler Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching in 1993. He was instrumental in establishing the Schang Family Visiting Writers Fund, and the William Schang Liberal Arts Scholarship was established in his honor.
Bill died on October 12, 2015. The Ripon College English Department held a memorial event for him on December 6, 2015, attended by many friends, colleagues, and family members, several of whom testified to Bill’s influence. His spirit expresses the essence of Our Better Angels. Watch the video below.
